One Day in the Past

Chapter 1 – A Normal Morning

Lucas wakes up at seven o’clock every morning. His alarm clock rings loudly on the small table next to his bed.

“Beep, beep, beep.”

Lucas opens one eye. He feels tired.

“I don’t want to get up,” he says quietly.

But Lucas usually gets up at seven. He turns off the alarm and sits up in bed.

Lucas doesn’t like waking up early, but he always goes to school on time.

He stands up, stretches his arms, and walks to the bathroom.

Lucas brushes his teeth and washes his face. He looks at himself in the mirror.

“My hair looks terrible,” he says.

He tries to fix it with his hands, but it doesn’t help.

Lucas doesn’t spend a lot of time in the bathroom. He usually gets ready quickly because he doesn’t like being late.

After that, he goes back to his room and makes his bed.

He doesn’t enjoy doing housework, but his mother says it is important.

“You should always make your bed,” she often says.

Lucas doesn’t always agree, but he does it anyway.

In the kitchen, his mother is making breakfast.

“Good morning, Lucas,” she says.

“Morning,” Lucas answers.

His little sister Emma is sitting at the table. She is eating cereal and watching a video on her phone.

“Emma,” their mother says, “no phones at the table.”

Emma sighs and puts the phone down.

Lucas opens the fridge.

“What are you looking for?” his mother asks.

“I want to find some juice,” Lucas says.

“There is orange juice,” she says.

Lucas pours a glass and sits down.

Lucas usually eats cereal for breakfast, but today he would like to eat something different.

“Can I have some toast?” he asks.

“Of course,” his mother says.

Lucas likes eating toast with jam. He doesn’t mind helping in the kitchen, so he sometimes helps his mother make breakfast.

Today he takes the plates to the table.

“Thanks for helping,” his mother says.

“No problem,” Lucas says.

After breakfast, Lucas stands up and takes his plate to the sink.

“Do you want to wash the dishes?” his mother asks.

Lucas smiles.

“I don’t mind washing dishes,” he says, “but I don’t want to wash them before school.”

His mother laughs.

“That’s honest,” she says.

Lucas sometimes helps with housework in the evening. He often washes the dishes and sometimes cleans the kitchen.

But he never enjoys cleaning his room.

Lucas looks at the clock.

“Oh no,” he says. “It’s 7:40!”

“Are you late?” Emma asks.

“I think so,” Lucas says.

He quickly grabs his backpack.

“I plan to study for my history test today,” he says.

“Good,” his mother says. “You didn’t study yesterday.”

Lucas shrugs.

“I know.”

Lucas puts on his jacket and opens the front door.

“Bye!” he says.

“Have a good day,” his mother says.

“Don’t forget your test,” Emma adds.

Lucas walks down the street to the bus stop. He usually takes the bus to school with his friend Marta.

The morning is cool and quiet. People are going to work. Cars are moving slowly through the streets.

Lucas sits on a bench and waits for the bus.
