Listen to the story and fill in the gaps in the text below with the correct for of the verb in brackets.
I remember that day very clearly. It was a rainy afternoon, and I was tired after work. My friend had invited me to a small café in the city center. She told me it was a warm place with good coffee and soft music.
I wanted to go. I even got ready and put on my coat. But at the last moment, I felt too tired. I sat down on my sofa and decided to stay home.
Now, I often think about that decision.
If I had gone to the café that day, I (meet) Anna.
I didn’t know her name at the time, of course. But later, my friend told me that she had met a girl there. That girl was Anna.
If I had met Anna, we (start) talking. My friend said Anna was friendly and kind. She loved books and music, just like me.
If we (start) talking, we would have discovered that we had many things in common. We both liked the same writers, the same films, and even the same quiet places in the city.
If we (discover) that, we would have become friends. I can imagine us laughing together, sharing stories, and meeting again the next week.
If we had become friends, we (spend) more time together. Maybe we would have walked in the park, or sat for hours in that same café.
If we had spent more time together, I (fall) in love with her. Not quickly, but slowly, in a calm and beautiful way.
If I (fall) in love with her, I would have told her my feelings. I think I would have been nervous, but honest.
If I had told her, she (feel) the same. My friend said Anna was looking for someone special, someone who understood her.
If she had felt the same, we would have had a beautiful life together. Maybe we would have traveled, built a home, and shared many quiet, happy moments.
But none of this happened.
I didn’t go to the café that day. I stayed at home and watched TV. It was a normal evening, nothing special.
A week later, my friend told me about Anna again. She said Anna had moved to another country for a new job. She never saw her again.
When I heard that, I felt something strange. It was like I had lost something important, even if I never had it.
Sometimes, small decisions change everything.
If I had not stayed at home that day, my life (be) completely different.
